According to the legend he slayed a dragon. During medieval times, dragons were thought to be real and extremely terrifying.
 
St George is said to have been chosen as the Patron Saint of England in 1350, by King Edward the third. He was admired for his bravery and gallantry - he was a Roman, however, it's believe he was born in Turkey.
